Empowering Samburu Women
eShopGiver proudly partners with Hope for Teenage Mothers, a project empowering teenage mothers through life skills training and a back to school program. As well as enabling girls to stay at school by supplying reusable sanitary pads and delivering training on how to use them, they also run an Economic Empowerment program that supports teenage mothers look after their children. The young mothers make quality items like table mats, floor mats and beaded bags.
Recently, Hope for Teenage Mothers trained 40 women from 14 sub counties of Samburu East, a 9 hour drive from Nairobi. Sanburu is characterised by a nomadic way of life. They rustly cattle, girls are often subjected to female gender mutilation and marry very young. To learn more, you can watch a short video.
Menstrual health is a big problem in Kenya, where girls often miss school for 5-6 days every month due to the lack of sanitary pads. Hope for Teenage Mothers are looking to replicate their programs in more counties in regional Kenya.
