Healthy Start Breakfast Program
As adults, we know how we feel if we don’t get breakfast – tired and agitated by 11am. Now, imagine you’re a five year old whose family is experiencing difficulties such as financial disadvantage, domestic violence, mental health problems or alcohol and substance abuse. Imagine that in order to eat breakfast, you have to find it for yourself - you’re expected to get yourself up and dressed in the morning because your parents can’t or won’t get out of bed and make your own way to school. Then you start the day hungry, finding it difficult to focus, behave and learn all day.
In Australia it’s estimated that around 25% of young people regularly miss breakfast and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds are six times more likely to miss breakfast than those from higher socio-economic backgrounds.
YWCA NSW believes that every child deserves to start every school day with a nutritional breakfast in a safe and nurturing environment to give them the best possible start to their day. Healthy Start Breakfast Programs give young people this opportunity.
$5 can help give children from areas of significant disadvantage the best start to their day - a healthy nutritious breakfast served by positive role models from their community. It can also help teach children the concept and importance of healthy living to help them now and in the future.
