Location Guatemala City, Central Highlands, Guatemala

The Lionfish is a predatory venomous fish which has been accidentally introduced in the Caribbean Basin. As a carnivore with no natural predators in the Caribbean, it can significantly reduce biodiversity of a local habitat and can drive important fish species to extinction, negatively affecting coral reef ecosystems.

The project will help fishing communities and authorities to control lionfish and monitor advances through: training workshops on capture and handling methods and field activities to control this species. It will also increase awareness among coastal residents of the impacts of the lionfish invasion through effective communication campaigns and collaboration in control of the lionfish in the MAR System.

To effectively capture and handle lionfish, users must get a very specific capture training and gear. The training consists in thoerical and practical workshops with the support of lionfish specialists. After they have completed the training, they are certified by the authorities.

This Project can be visited all year long and at any day of the week from 8 to 5 pm. Depending on which of the four countries you want to visit (Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and/or Honduras) it can take from 2 to 5 hours to get to the site from the largest city. In Honduras you can visit Roatan and/or Utila; in Belize you can visit Punta Gorda, Placencia and/or Dangriga; in Mexico you can visit Puerto Morelos, Xcalak and/or Cozumel.
